Associate Bonuses May be a Disappointing This Year
Last year a few large law firms were able to pay associates bonuses totaling up to $100,000. This year it is likely to be a different story. Practices in real-estate are especially going to feel the blow from their slowdown of legal work and dismal profits. Not only may bonuses be displeasing, but decisions about bonus distribution may come later than usual. For example, Michele Martin of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius said the delay will give the firm time to conduct ''substantive evaluations'' and discuss the compensation. This also gives the firm time to check the outlook of 2009. Firms in smaller cities that haven't been hit as hard by the economic slowdown or are tied to Wall street may offer bonuses more in line with 2007.
