White & Case Expands Mideast Practice
White & Case has opened an office in Abu Dhabi, where six of its lawyers will relocate. The firm has also expanded its Riyadh office. The office in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, will include four lawyers who will be relocating to the office. By the end of this year, eight will be in the office. White & Case's offices in the Middle East will focus on Islamic finance and assets as well as infrastructure projects, among other issues. More than 60 of the firm's lawyers currently work in the Middle East. White & Case has more than 2,000 lawyers in more than 24 countries.
Foley & Lardner Enters China
Two lawyers are going to oversee the new Foley & Lardner office in Shanghai, China, for now. Partner Catherine Sun will be the first to relocate for this purpose. By opening a Shanghai office, Foley hopes to obtain more IP business, including work pertaining to trademarks, patents, and other copyright issues. The Milwaukee-based firm will also handle transactions in China and IP counseling between markets. Foley has one other office in Asia — a Tokyo office that was established in 2003.
U.S. and U.K. Firms Open Branches in Italy
U.S. and U.K. firms are expanding their markets internationally. Latham & Watkins recently launched Italian law practices. The U.S. firm has opened offices in Rome and Milan, and it is the first to have done so with "Italian-qualified lawyers." U.K. firms, such as Linklaters, have also been attempting to expand into the Italian market in order to compete with other firms.
