Paralegals Win Big
On Monday June 2nd, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Richlin Security Service Co. v. Chertoff, issuing a ruling which held that paralegals can recover fees from the federal government at market rates, instead of at a cost which the government decides. This is a big win for the paralegal industry.
Layoffs at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal
Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, as part of a major staff cut, has "separated" 75 staff members and 12 paralegals, in addition to 37 lawyers, for a total of 87 job cuts. The layoffs were spread around the firm's various offices.
More Layoffs Predicted
The website New York Lawyer predicts more layoffs for paralegals and other legal staff in the near future, as firms tighten their belts. Best advice: increase your billables so as to survive the axe.
