Lawyers volunteer to Assist Frustrated Voters
Election Protection, the nation's largest non-partisan voter protection coalition, formed Our Vote Live to ensure that all voters have an equal opportunity to participate in the political process. A state of the art hotline: 1-866-OUR-VOTE (administered by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law) was created for disgruntled voters to call after feeling they had been treated unfairly at the election polls. Made up of more than 100 local, state and national partners, this year's coalition was the largest voter protection and education effort in the nation's history. Throughout the election process, volunteer attorneys, law students and paralegals - more than 10,000 strong - entered data and information into OurVoteLive.org. Lawyers received calls of complaints and gave advice on how they can make sure their vote is counted and went to court to preserve voting access. More than 40 major lawsuits involving voting procedures are already pending. The pro bono support from law firms is the coalition's main source of funding.

Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP and Squire Sanders & Dempsey LLP have each been awarded a contract for roughly $5.5 million to help shepherd about 2,000 financial firms through the program that would see the government buy company shares, the Treasury Department said on Monday. Law firm Simpson Thatcher & Bartlett will advise the Treasury on its equity purchase program.
